VALEDICTORY.

- A SEASIDE. FUNCTION

The Beach residents assembled in the Hall at the local seaside last night to say an revoir to Mr. and Mrs. A. Alsop, prior to their departure on a trip to England. Mr. J. K. Hornblow presided and on behalf of the seaside residents extended best wishes for a pleasant journey and safe return. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor (Mr. Perreau), and Mr. Whitehead, chairman of the Beach Improvement Committee, of which Mr. Alsop is a member. The latter conveyed the committee’s best wishes for a pleasant trip and safe return.

Mr. Steer, on behalf of the residents, presented Mrs. Alsop with a writing companion, and Mr. Alsop with a wallet as tokens of esteem.

Messrs J. Bett, Davey and Hartley also made appreciative references to the guests, and referred to their willing assistance in all matters appertaining to the social welfare of the residents.

The speeches concluded with the singing of “For they are jolley good fellows.”

Mr. aid Mrs. Alsop feelingly acknowledged the good wishes expressed and thanked the residents for their tokens of esteem. The people of the Beach, said Mr. Alsop, were some of the best folk he had come in contact with, and it had been a pleasure to work with them. The seaside Avas one of the finest health resorts in New Zealand, and if all would do a little to improve the environment it would become increasingly popular. He hoped to take up his permanent residence at the Beach on his return.

After a tasty, supper had been partaken of, dancing Avas indulged in and a happy social time spent.
