SERIOUS FIRES ON EAST COAST.
Gisborne, February 29.
Grass and second growth fires are raging in the Cape Runaway district.
Mr. J. Downey’s house has been totally destroyed, his wife just getting out in time with two infants. An unconfirmed report states that the Kohu station woolshed owned by Mr. Geo. Kirk has been destroyed. a Messrs Granswick and Thomas, settlers on the Waitangahia station, have been forced to leave their places and to bury their household goods. Mr. A. A. Woods’ at Lottin Point, was in danger all night. At last report the danger had diminished. At Horn station soldier settlement fires were raging but no buildings are' destroyed so far. Downeys’ and the Kohu stations are insured.
