CAR’S FATAL PLUNGE.

MOTHER AND TWO CHILDREN DROWNED. Nelson, Last Night. A very sad accident resulting in the death of Mrs. J. Hickey, of 31 Collingwood Street, Nelson, and her two children, occurred on the Nel-son-Blenheim road last nighto

Mr. Hickey was returning to Nelson with his family from a week end in Blenheim and they were accompanied by Mr. B. West and Mervyn Stewart, a nephew of Mrs, Hickey. About three miles tins side of Havelock, en route to Nelson the car, when about to pass another car coming in the opposite direction, ran across the road and plunged into a deep lagoon. As it was very dark and raining at the time what actually happened was not known but apparently Mrs Hickey anl her children were im prisoned by the car. Mr West, who is a powerful swimmer, brought Mr Hickey and Mervyn Stewart out of the water, but he was unable to locate any of the others.

The victims are: Mrs Hickey, Lillian Hickey (aged 9), and Maurice Hickey (aged 3). When some other motorists came along a little later a tackle was procured and an attempt made to raise the vehicle. The wheels, however, became wedged against the bank anl efforts had to be abandoned until daylight. The bodies were recovered this morning.
