MOTORIST FINED £SO.
DRUNK IN CHARGE OF CAR.
Wanganui, February 27. George Lambert Brine Williams was charged in the Magistrate’s Court to-day with being in charge of a motor-car while in a state of intoxication. Accused pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Lopdell said that on the day of the offence accused had been to the races and had remained in town for the evening. On going up Portal Street he had collided with another car. Accused was not in a bad state of intoxication. Mr. Brodie said that defendant was a sober man, and a gentleman of yepute would bear this out. On the day of the offence defendant had no lunch and what liquor he had would not have had that effect on him if he had been a drinking man. Counsel submitted that the license under the circumstances should not be cancelled. Evidence was called to support the statement of sobriety. The Magistrate (Mr. 1 Barton) inflicted a fine of £SO. He added that only the previous day he had been called to Hawera to open an inquest on the victim of a motor accident, and after which the driver of thj| car had been immediately arrested on a charge of intoxication.
