SWIMMING.

FOXTON DEFEATS CAMP ON POINTS.

Last evening a series of races were held in the local baths when representatives from the 6th Battery (Napier), now in camp on the racecourse, competed against local swimmers. Foxton succeeded in defeating the visitors on points. The swimming was of a high standard, and was thoroughly enjoyed by a large section of the public, who were in attendance. The results are as follows: — Relay Race, 100 yards: Foxton A (North, Swanger, Marshall, W. Hirini) defeated Camp A (Carter, Rolls, Cohen and Gallop). A very close finish after an exciting race. 50 yards, open: —Ist heat: W. Hirini (Foxton) 1, Gallop (Camp) 2, six starters; 2nd heat: North (Foxton) and Rolls (Camp) dead heat; five starters. Final: — North (Foxton) 1, Rolls (iCamp) 2, Hirini (Foxton) 3. A good race with very little difference between the placed men. Relay race, 100 yards: Foxton B (E. Robinson, Desjardines, V. Moore and E. Ball) lost to Camp (Murdock, Archer, Jordon and Cohen). Won by a good two yards. Diving:—'Bowles (Camp) 1, Gallop (Camp) 2. Six competitors.

W. Hirini showed up well last evening. This swimmer always has a great burst of speed in reserve, and ranks next to Harrison among local swimmers.

It is unfortunate that North will shortly be leaving Foxton. A finished swimmer, he has done much to improve the style of local swimmers. He will be greatly missed as with Harrison, he has held the leading place in local acquatic events.

The entries for the swimming carnival on Saturday evening constitute a record. Over 120 have already been received, including some of the North Island champions. Suitable arrangements have been made to light the baths for Saturday. Palmerston N. alone is entering four relay teams. Patrons will have an opportunity of witnessing S. Leader, Manawatu’s champion breast stroke exponent “in action” on Saturday evening.
