(To the Editor)
Sir, —I noticed in your paper re- ' cently that certain land in this district was being menaced by noxious weeds. ,Well, sir, is that not an indication that some people are holding more land than they can look after or put to profitable use? With so much unemployment in the Dominion at the present time.and the cry for “production and more production,” could not the Government acquire areas of such waste land and assist the qualified of the unemployed to settle on it and make it productive? This would be more profitable to the State than subsidising local body grants to provide temporary employment. This country, sir, is capable pf carrying a population of ten millions provided the land .is closely settled and scientifically farmed. It would be better to assist people, without means, to occupy such land under a satisfactory and safe scheme. Perhaps our member for the district will look into this question. 'Better to have the land occupied by human beings than noxious weeds. —Thanking you in anticipation. Yours, etc., ■ TOILER.
