PARLIAMENT.
HOW MR. COATES VIEW'S IT.
“My experience of Parliament has been that -at least nine-tenths of the men who come there do so because they feel they have a duty to perform,” said the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. J. G. Coates) at the Masterton A. and P. Association reunion on Wednesday. “I believe they perform that duty with credit to themselves and the people they represent.” “It is a thankless task, for the reason that one is open to all kinds of criticism. As soon as a man takes up a public life he can say good-bye to any character he might have had. (Laughter). And if he hasn’t got a character he very soon has one made for him.” (Renewed laughter). Mr. Coates paid a tribute to the members of the present Parliament, remarking that though they “might fight like blazes” when in the Chamber, -all differences were forgotten as soon as they left it. They had every reason to be j3roud of their Parliament in New Zealand. It would stand comparison with the other Parliaments of the world.
