THE SCOW “THE PORTLAND.”
ARRIVES IN FOXTON
Mr. H. Osborne’s newly-pur-chased scow, “The Portland,” arrived at the local wharf shortly after 10 o’clock this morning when there was a large number of local residents and business people in attendance to witness the arrival of the vessel on its first trip to Foxton. The scow crosse'l the bar at a little after 9 o’clock this morning, having left Wellington at 6 p.m. yesterday, and was piloted up the river by Captain C. Larsen (pilot). The tide at the time was three hours past full with about six feet of water on the bar and the scow, with 50 to GO tons of benzine and general, was drawing only three feet.
Captain Williams is in charge of the vessel and is assisted by a crew of four. “The Portland” is equipped with two Keighley 30 h.p. deisel engines, with blow-pipe ignition and compressed air start. The boat is electrically lit throughout. Besides the auxiliary power the vessel has a spread of 500 feet of canvas. The winch is motor driven.
The trip up from Wellington was made practically under engine power, owing to the absence of a breeze.
It is understood that Captain Williams will make his home in Fox-ton. He intends to make two to three trips to Wellington per week.
