FOXTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

Vernon Moore, who passed the recent Matriculation Examination, has been appointed a probationer on the staff of | the school. ..

Decirna Brown, a pupil of the senior secondary and who won the Bock Alemorias prize for the dux girl of the primary department in .1925 has been awarded an Alexander Scholarship by the Wanganui Education Board. This scholarship is tenable for one year, at the Wanganui Technical High School and is awarded to prospective entrants to the teaching profession. Meta Alason, of the junior secondary, swam one mile in the local baths on Saturday morning, a good performance for so young a girl, and one we hope will be emulated by many others. The’ exceedingly hot weather at present prevailing is proving most trying to both scholars and teachers of the school, particularly in the afternoons. . The matter of : equipping the science, woodwork and co.okery rooms in the new High School building is at present receiving the attention of the Education Department. s/si Receipts for tickets sold in connection with last week’s picnic excursion to Ashhurst were higher this year than on any previous occasion. The Education Board has at present under consideration the rnatter -.of appointing part-time teachers to give instruction in commercial subjects in the District High School.

v Messrs Swanger (secretary), and G.'Hodges (architect) of the Wanganui Board w r ere visitors to Fox* ton yesterday. The headmaster of .the school brought under the secretary’s notice the matter of evening classes for those desirous of taking up some form of manual and technical training. Whether such classes will be inaugurated, depends entirely on the numbers offering/and the possibility of obtaining competent instructors. From casual enquiries made there appears to be a desire to have classes established in such subjects as woodwork, cookery, dress-making, millinery, and mechanical drawing. If such classes are established they will be conducted during the winter months. a
