SUPREME COURT.

QUARTERLY SESSION

The Palmerston North quarterly session of the Supreme Court was opened on. Tuesday morning, Hon. Mr Justice MacGregor presiding.

His Honour, in his charge to the Grand Jury, said: “I am sorry to say, that the criminal calendar at this sitting is rather a heavy one. There are five persons for trial on five indictments, and some at least of them are alleged in respect of grave and serious offences. I think you will find in these cases that the facts are fairly clear, and that no -difficulty is presented. Two of the cases are of a kind becoming altogether too frequent —motor accident cases. In each death was allegedly through a negligent act or omission on the part of the driver. The law is quite clear —that any person driving a motor vehicle must exercise reasonable care; otherwise, he is criminally liable if any person- —passenger or otherwise —is killed by his negligence.” His Honour then briefly reviewed the evidence in the various cases. TRUE BILLS.

True bills were returned in four cases, namely:— Rex v. Charles George Wilmot Palmer, alleged indecent assault. Rex v. Richard George Harland, alleged unlawful carnal knowledge. Rex v. Frank Lawrence Farr, allegedly causing death through negligent driving of a motor car. Rex v. Corneille Hubert de May d’Alkemade, alleged attempted sale of stock without authority.

“NO BILL” AGAINST MITCHELL. “No bill” was returned by the grand jury in the case wherein it was alleged that Alexander Kirk Mitchell had caused the death of his wife through negligent driving of a motor car.

At the-Palmerston North Supreme Court yesterday Charles George Wilmot Palmer, arraigned for indecent assault on a male, reversed his lower Court plea and pleaded guilty. Prisoner t'as remanded for sentence.

Hika Pounama Parata, aged 22, a former postal official, for the theft of a postal packet and for forgery and uttering, was ordered to come np for sentence within two years and also ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution. His Honour said the case was not an appropriate one for probation. Accused, said His Honour, had pleaded guilty and made a clean breast of the facts. >
