HEMP MARKET.

JANUARY GRADING RETURNS.

The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper tow, and slips for the month of January have been issued by the Department of Agrieultm-e as follows: —

Seventy-two bales at Picton were graded fine. Thirty-two bales at Auckland, 212 at Wellington, 112 at Foxton, 2 at the Bluff, and 6 at Lyttelton were rejected. Eight hales at Wellington were condemned.

The number of bales in each grade was as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Fine 72 (19), good fair 595 (777), high fair 3,420 (3,402), low fair 3,026 (2,611), common 679 (724), rejected 27§ (344), condemned 8 (nil), a total of 8,073 bales, as against 7.877 bales graded the same? period last year, an increase of 19G bales.

The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 2,316, Wellington 2,535, Foxton 1,668, Wairoa 76, Picton 104, Blenheim 179, Pt. Chalmers 134, Bluff 931, Lyttelton 130.

The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow graded:—

Twenty-four bales at Auckland, 9 at Wellington, 39 at Foxton, 1 at Pt. Chalmers, and 4 at the Bluff were condemned. ;;

The fallowing shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Ist grade 372 (404), 2nd grade 1221 (1474), 3rd grade 702 (335), condemned 77 (106), a total of 2/462 bales, as against 2,319 bales graded the same period last year, an increase of 143 bales.

The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 863, Wellington 498, Foxton 483, Wairoa 26, Picton 44, Blenheim 99, Pt. Chalmers 21, Bluff 396, Lyttelton 32.

Stripper tow. —Thirty-six bales at Wellington were graded Ist grade, thirty-six bales at Wellington, and 8 ’at Foxton were graded 2nd grade. A total numj)er of 80 bales, as against 312 bales graded the same period last year, showing a decrease of 232 bales. Sti’ipper Slips. —Fifty-four bales . at Wellington were graded Ist grade. One bale at Auckland, 36 at Wellington, and 27 at the Bluff were graded 2nd grade. Three bales at the Bluff were condemned- Twen-ty-one bales at Auckland and 107 at the Bluff were passed for export. » The total number graded was 249 bales, as against nil for the corresponding period of last year.
