NEWS AND NOTES.

Employment of boys and girls under the age of sixteen years in connection with the business of any shop before the hour of 7 a.m. is now prohibited. This new provision, included in the Shops and Offices Act of last session, came into force on Wednesday. Hitherto young persons could be employed in butchers,’ bakers’ and milk shops from 4 a.m. like other assistants.

Painted on a piece of apron calico, a pointing by a plumber was exhibited in a Loudon show last year and bought by a well-known expert.
