REGISTRATION OF MOTOR VEHICLES.
FOURTEEN-MONTH PERIOD
Although the registration of motor vehicles for the coming year commenced on Wednesday, the period covered will be fourteen months, this course being adopted in order to avoid clashing with the annual general accounting of the Money Order Offiice in March, a proportionately heavier fee 'being payable to meet the position. The schedule of fees ivas subjected to further adjustments by Act of Parliament last session. Motor-cars and motor-cycles pay the same, £2 6s Bd, and lis 8d respectively, which sums cover registration for fourteen months, but do not include the 2s 6d payable for new number-plates.
Bus and lorry fees have been reduced, buses from £5 to £3 a year, and lorry fees, where the lorry is of more than one-ton capacity, from £3 to £2 a year. Dealers this year are governed by a new arrangement that they will probably welcome. Demonstration plates hitherto issued for 10s and 6s will now be issued for a full year on payment of £2 for cars and 10s for motor-cycles. These may lie attached to any car used in the general way of business, a provision which practically abolishes the restrictions hitherto found so irksome.
The colour scheme for the combind year will be white on brown. In order to expedite registrations the officials will accept applications without the necessary fees, which must he paid, however, before delivery of the plates is given.
