One of the attractions billed in connection with the Grey District Diamond Jubilee celebrations to be held at the end of next month and beginning of March is the grand Jubilee Regatta featuring the “Fast and Favourite” s.s. Kennedy (1805 pioneer steamer). The Kennedy is still in active service and is the only coastal vessel which keeps up a regular service between Wellington, Lyttelton and Foxton. ' Since 1865, however, the vessel has been considerably altered, but is still as sea . worthy as when she was the pride of the epast.
At Wanganui Magistrate’s Court, the other day Mr. Barton, S.M., Avas. asked to make an order against a defaulting debtor, counsel arguing thait defendant admitted spending 1/6 a week on tobacco. The Magistrate is reported to have replied: “I can see po more reason for cutting off debtor’s tobacco than cutting off dhe sugar in his tea.” Doubtless Mr. Barton recognised that the habitual smoker would go without tea altogether rather than give up his pipe. To a great many.men tobacco is not a luxury —it is a necessity. Anti-to-baccoites say ist is highly injurious. It isn’t, provided the right kind of tobacco is used. The. imported brands, we all know, contain far too pinch nicotine to be wholesome. But what about, our own New Zealand tobacco? They contain so little nicotine that they n\ay be considered rather beneficial than otherwise. And you can’! beat them tor flavour and fragrance. That’s because they are toasted. Ask any tobacconist for “Riverhead Gold” mild, “Navy Cut” (Bulldog) medium, or “Cut Plug No. 10” (Bullslioad), full strength.
Larrikins have been making themselves objectionable by creating a nuisance in shop entrances in Main St. If caught they will receive severe punishment. Light showers of rain have fallen intermittently throughout this district since this morning. Good soaking rain, however, is badly needed.
