SUBSIDIARY HIGHWAYS.
FEW IN HOROWHENUA. At Saturday’s meeting of the Horowlienua County Council a discussion centred round the declaring of subsidiary highways iu the county, -the
chairman, Cr. Monk, said that officials of the Main Highways Board had suggested. while in conference with him, that the roads which could be consid- i ered such were as follow: Waihoanga- j Te Horo, Levin Hokio and Wai.kanae- i Waimeha. He thought that these I would be all that would really come ! within that category. He, therefore, | suggested that they be submitted to the District Highways Council. Cr. Kilsby mentioned the FoxtonKoputarua Road which, he stated, carried very heavy traffic. In his opinion it. should also become u sub- J sidiary highway. It was a costly road . to maintain. Cr. Jensen desired to know if the Highways Board would require such a high standard of surface on subsidiary highways as would entail hardship on the ratepayers. The chairman pointed out that this would not be so. The county would, at any rate, have to keep the roads in decent order and if they wished to ■ improve them it was their own busi- | ness. Surely it was worth while to get the subsidy. i Cr. Monk then. proposed that the : three roads lie had mentioned should ! be submitted to the District Council, j As an amendment Cr. Kilsby pro- j. posed that the Koputarua-Foxton ; Road should also be included. J The amendment was lost and the ; motion carried.
