FOUND DEAD.
GAS TURNED ON.
SECRET OF A DESERTED HOUSE. *
On Saturday night, Miss Clara Alice Cox, aged about 40, believed to be a trained nurse, Avas found dead in her house at 24 Plymouth Street, W T anganui.
For several days the house had been shut up and the neighbours bleieved Miss Cox to be on holiday, but on Saturday night they became suspicious and the police Averc called.
The room in which deceased was found by the constable avßo entered the house had gas lighting. An inverted mantle was found in position and the gas Avas turned on, hut the mantle Avas not lighted. The constable states that otherwise the position of the deceased in the bed and the appearance of the room Avere quite natural. Letters Avere found under the door dated as far back as January 5, bearing out the statement of the constable that the woman had been dead for a Aveek or more. The deceased is believed to have relatives in or about Wellington, but none in Wanganui. An inquest will be held.
