BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting' of the Foxton Borough Council was held last evening. 'Reports were read and dealt with as follows: MOTION OF SYMPATHY. A motion of sympathy was passed to Or. M. H. Wjalker and relatives in their recent bereavement. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows: From the Main Highways Board, in connection with the construction of the new Shannon Bridge, notifying the Council that a clause had been included in this year’s local Legislation Bill enabling the; local authorities who are making a contribution towards the cost of this brid- , ge to raise the necessary funds by special order. (-Fox-ton’s share is £850). . The Mayor said that an endeavour had been made to get the County Council to raise the whole of the money for the local bodies concerned in one lump sum and for the Councils to be responsible to that body, but the County Council had' not been favourable to this suggestion. If this had been done the * Council could have paid its share off at, say, £IOO per annum, and so prevent an appreciable increase in the rates. It was decided to refer the matter to the Finance Committee to report to the next meeting. From the Standard Service Station making application to the Council for permission to erect a notice-board on the Council’s Domain at the south end of the town. —Refused. 'From the Department of Internal Affairs forwarding a draft copy of the dangerous goods amendment Act. —Received. , 'From the Mayor of Greymouth forwarding an invitation to the Mayor to attend the diamond jubilee of Greymouth from February 25th to March 3rd. —Received. From the Audit Department returning the Council’s balancesheet for 1926-27 duly audited.— The balance-sheet was forthwith adopted. WANDERING STOCK. A complaint was made by Cr. Cowley that a horse had been continually tethered in Reeve Street and stock was also allowed to graze on tins' roadway.—Referred to the ranger. WEDNESDAY HALF-HOLIDAY. It was decided to take no action in connection with the local halfholiday, it being unanimous that the half-day be Wednesday, as in the past. GENERAL. The Town Clerk was granted permission to attend the Town Clerks’ conference in Nelson at an early date. ' WATERWORKS FOREMAN’S • REPORT. The waterworks foreman reported that during the month the following work had been earned out: —(Cleaning house drains and two main sewers (one in Coley Street, and the other in Robinson Street); repairing one broken water main in Jenfcs Street, connecting two householders with the town supply and attending to general mainten- > ance work, ranging, etc. Pumping Station report During the month 2,155,000 gallons of water was pumped, the maximum current used being 31 amps.—Adopted. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The road foreman reported that during the month the road staff had been engaged in patching ruts in Sandon Road, and Johnston Street, and also the junction of Park and Robinson Streets; grading Work was carried out on the Moutoa, Sandon, and Avenue Roads, No. 6 Line and Purcell St.; posts and chains removed from Triangle; grass mowed in the cemetery and general maintenance work carried out. The staff was at present engaged in top-dressing the various bitumenised footpaths in the borough with fine chips.—Adopted.
