MAINTENANCE ARREARS
ARREST AFTER SEVERAL YEARS. Masterton, December 29. A warrant for the arrest of Edward Egan, issued at Masterton in respect to arrears of maintenance close on six years ago, was executed at Palmerston North on Mondaylast, when Egan was taken into custody on a charge of drunkenness. To-day Egan, who is a carpenter by occupation, appeared before Mr.’ S. L. P. Free, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Masterton, charged with being in arrears of maintenance to the extent of £3l up to December 23, 1921, in respect to an order for the support of his child.
Sergeant T. 11. Dyer said that Egan, had been arrested for drunkenness at Palmerston North, and then the maintenance charge had been brought against him. The £3l arrears were up to the time that the warrant was issued, but they now amounted to £lB7. Accused was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as accused pays 10/- per week current maintenance and 5/- per week off the arrears. A condition was also imposed that Egan report to the police once a month.
