ST PETER’S MISSION CAMP
While it is true we have no slums in this Dominion to compare with the real slum quarters in the old land, still there are some very squalid and congested quarters in our cities. Strange, too, that people who have resided for any length' of time in such environment are loath to quit. The Rev. Fielden Taylor is in charge of a mission in what is known as the slum quarter of Wellington. Apart from his mission work he ari’anges annual camps in the country for hoys and girls who live in the so-called slum area. A camp of upwards of 300 boys is at present situated on the local racecourse, kindly lent by the local Racing Club for the purpose. The boys are well catered for, and appear to be having a real good time. Apart from their camp routine they enjoy certain privileges in the town such as the use of the public swimming baths and passes to the municipal pictures. The lads on the whole are fairly well-behaved and the change should benefit them both physically and morally. It is to be hoped that the boys will show their appreciation of the Racing Club’s generosity by refraining from doing any damage to the ground;* and buildings which are in readiness for the forthcoming meeting. Any acts of this kind may ' prejudice their Chances of occupying the property in the future.
