“TAG” ON BALANCE-SHEET. Carterton, December 20. At to-night’s meeting of the Carterton Borough Council a tag on a balance-sheet from the Government Audit Department disqualified Councillor G. Hughan in the teims of section 40 (L) of tile Municipal Corporations Act, 1920. The law limits the amount to which such a body may deal with one of its members to £lO, and actually the firm of which Mr. Hughan is principal has only been paid £9 2s 7d, the additional amount which exceeds the limit being due to the firm receiving an insurance premium on a truck amounting to £3 5s Bd, as agents for the insurance company. Mr. Hughan will be a candidate 101 re-election. On the motion of the Mayor (Mr. W Fisher), seconded by iCouncillor J. L. Churchouse, the following resolution was earned:—“That this council extends its sympathy to the Deputy-Mayor in the position brought about by a technical breach ol the statutes, expresses continued confidence in him and assures him full support for re-election.
