The condition of Mr. J. Mathers, of Foxton, who is at present an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital, is causing his relatives anxiety.

The friends of Mr G. F. Smith, will regret to learn that he was taken ill with a serious indisposition on Wednesday as a result of which he has been confined to his bed ever since.

Miss Madge McColl, of Foxton, received the prize for merit in English in form IVA at the annual prize giving in connection with the Palmerston North Gilds’ High School on Thursday night. Miss Marjorie Hunt received the prize for honours in English.

The engagement is announced of Dorothy, youngest daughter of Mr. Stewart Fail-hall, and Mrs. Fairhall, Hataitai, and Harold, youngest son of the late Mr. F. W, Fran lolaiid, Foxton, and Mrs. Frankland, of Tinakori Road, Wellington.

The girls basket ball team of the local D.H. School, made Mrs. Stanley a presentation yesterday afternoon in appreciation of her services in connection with this branch if school life. The presentation was made on behalf of the team by Mr. Mason (headmaster), and was gracefully acknowledged by the recipient.

Miss Leslie, who resigned from (lie teaching staff of the local D.IT. School yesterday, was presented with tokens of esteem by members of the staff and pupils. The presentation was made by Mr. Mason (headmaster), who referred to the excellent work done by Miss Leslie during her eighteen months connection with the school and wished her happiness for the future. The recipient feelingly thanked the staff and children for their tokens of esteem and expressions of good will.
