It is reported that the division of opinion on the licensing issue among members is responsible for a special Reform [Party caucus earlynext month. The Royal Humane Society awarded a bronze medal to Thomas Rennie, aged 17, of St. Ivilda, Dunedin, for rescuing a man from drowning and a letter of commendation to Alexander Zachan, a nightwaitchman at Napier, for saving a schoolboy from drowning.

The advent of another faith healer among the Maoris has created quite a stir in the settlements of this coast (says the Raglan paper). The new “prophet” visited Kawhia, and is reported to have effected several remarkable cures, his methods being of ithe mesmeric order. The fact that his services 'are quite gratuitous also appeals strongly to Ike natives, and he has established a very favourable reputation. The Auckland Cit yiCouneil does not seem to be at all popular with the Mount Roskill Road Board, states the “New Zealand Herald.” At the meeting of the road board last evening, when the question of water charges was being discussed, the City Council was referred to as “the octopus.” Later, when the council gave formal notice of the new tramway fares and sections, and stated the matter of furnishing the board with an estimate of the probable loss on the working of the tramway system in Dominion, road had been referred to the "tramways manager, the board resolved to receive the letter “with disgust.”
