JOY NIGHT NO. I.

A HAPPY GATHERING. The Returned Soldiers’ Committee are to be congratulated upon the . success which attended the joy night function which they organised and carried out in the Town Hall on Tuesday night to raise funds for supplying the children of the town and listriet with gitfs on Christmas eve, which is being arranged by the Mayor. The interior of the hall was tastefully decorated with coloured streamers and the floor space was occupied by a large gathering, the majority of whom were attired in fancy costumes, some of which were particularly attractive, and others amusing. Several young men looked attractive in female attire and several young i ladies returned the compliment by appearing in male costume. Space will not permit giving details of those in character. Messrs Yeo, H. Hornblow and Scott, assisted by the Mayor and others, kept things going merrily and every one entered into the joy of the evening. Balloons, paper hats, etc., w ere on sa - e in the room and these extras added to the of the gathering. Soft drinks, ice creams, and refreshments were procurable at •small cost and good business was done in this connection. An ugly •man” competition supervised by Mr. H. Reid added to the receipts. The Mayor (Mr. Perreau), expressed appreciation of the efforts of the local Returned Soldiers’ Committee in assisting to provide funds for the children’s Christmas treat; During the evening Miss Ashby danced the Highland fling and Miss N. Pritchard contributed a vocal ’ item, both of whicr werem uch appreciated. The dance music was supplied by Messrs J. Newton, E. Graham, B. Walls, S. Small and Scott, and extras were played by several of the young ladies present.
