HOUSE BROKEN INTO.

AND SUM OF MONEY TAKEN.)' Between 6 and 9 o’clock this morning the dwelling of Mr R. Sorbie, at the rear of Mr F. Smith’s residence in Johnston Street, was broken into and the sum of £22 stolen from a pocket book in a coat in one of the rooms.

In conversation with our representative, Mr R. Sorbie said that he lgft the house at 6.15 a.m., when he commenced his milk round. Before leaving he saw that the window was secured and the door locked. On returning home at 9 o’clock he noticed the gate, usually left open, was shut. On entering .the dwelling lie found the copper wires securing the window had been cut, and discovered his coat and riding trousers, which he had left hung up, lying on the bed. Further investigation disclosed the fact that £22 in notes had been taken from his pocket book in the pocket. The money was in a roll, and the band securing it as well as two bands around the book were found inside the wallet. The wires which had secured the windows had the appearance of having been filed through. The matter was communicated to Constable Owen, who immediately made an investigation, but thelc*'heavy rain had obliterated any tracks that might have been left by the intruder.
