TENNIS

FOXTON DEFEAT SHANNON. On Saturday afternoon Shannon Club journeyed to Foxton where they met and were defeated by the home team. The weather was ideal and the courts in excellent playing condition. Each team won twelve sets, but Foxt'on gained the majority of matches winning 156 to Shannon’s 151. The play resulted as follows, 'Shannon players being mentioned first: —

Men’s singles.—C. Hunt lost to C. Pricter 3 —9; F. Pickard lost to L. C. Bryant 5—9; J. Humphries lost to N. Ross 5 —9; J. Mabey beat W. Roach 9 —7; S. Jones lost to W. Ross 3—9; W. Goodwin lost to R. Me Murray 4 —9. Ladies’ singles.—Miss M. Brown beat Miss E. Owen 7 —3; Mrs Cronquest lost to Mrs. McMurray 5 —7; Mrs. Moynihan lost to Miss M. Stevenson 6—7; Miss D. Jones beat Mrs. Eruera 7 —5; Mrs. Hennnessy lost to Mrs. Ball 5 —7; Miss M. Butler beat Miss M. Denton 7 —5. Combined doubles. —'Miss Brown and Hunt beat Miss Owen and Procter 9—4; Mrs. Moynihan and Pickard lost to Mrs. McMurray and Bryant B—9;8 —9; Miss 0. Jones and Humphries lost to Miss Stevenson and N. Ross 3 —9; Mrs. Cronquest and Mabey beat Mrs. Eruera and McMurray 9 —4; Miss M. Butler and Jones beat Mrs. Ball and Roach 9 —5; Mrs. Hennessy and Goodwin beat Miss Denton and !W. Ross 9 4.

Ladies’ doubles. —Mrs. Moynihan and Mi's. Conquest beat Mrs. McMurray and Miss Owen 7 —5; Misses IBrown and Jones beat Mrs. Ball and Miss Stevenson 7—2; Mrs. Hennessy and Miss Butler beat Mrs. Eruera and Miss Denton 7—3.Men’s doubles. —Pickard and Humphries lost to ‘Procter and Bryant 3—9; Hunt and Mabey lost to N. Ross and Roach 5 —9; Jones and Goodwin beat McMurray and W. Ross 9 —7.

At the conclusion of play afternoon tea was provided by the ladies after which Mr. Humphries on behalf of ’ the visitors, thanked the local Club for its hospitality and called for cheers for the ladies and the Foxton Club.

Mr. R, McMurray responded on behalf of the local Club.

The Tennis Club, held a successful dance in the Masonic Hall on Saturday evening. There was a good attendance and an enjoyable time was spent by all present.
