FOXTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

COMMITTEE MEETING,

The monthly meeting of the local District High School Committee was held last evening, presided over by the chairman (Mr J. K. Hornblow). There were also present: Messrs Alsop, Cowley, Jno. Ross, A. Stevenson, G. Huntley, H. Hutchins, R. Rangiheuea (hon. secretary), and the headmaster (Ml - F. A. Mason). Correspondence was read from Mr Wm. R. Bock re the Walter Bock Memorial prizes.—The Chairman reported that Mr Bock had consented to the Committee’s recommendation that the prizes he divided between the primary and secondary departments of the school —to the dux boy and girl in each division — and that the winners’ names be placed on an honours board in each department. — The sub-committee set up to arrange for the design of the honours boards was granted an .extension of time.

It was reported that the Education Board would provide a memorial in the secondary department to the beneficiaries of the late Ihakara Tokomaru, who gave the land upon which the building is erected, but if the Committee desired a second memorial in connection with the opening, it would have to defray cost of same. —Left in the hands of the Chairman, Secretary and Headmaster to confer with the architect. The financial statement disclosed a credit of 4s Id.

The Headmaster reported upon the recent examinations. Thirtytwo candidates were presested for proficiency, and 31 gained same. Throughout the whole school a high standard of efficiency obtained, and die attendance had been well maintained. Next Thursday the annual school concert would be held, and on Friday afternoon the infants would be entertained by the teaching staff, and prizes and certificates won during the year presented. Twenty pupils would be transferred to the secondary department next year. The school would break up for the summer vacation on Friday, 16th inst., and resume on Wednesday, February Ist. • Greetings were conveyed to the Committee from the staff.

The report was adopted, and minor repairs authorised, and the headmaster and staff congratulated upon the year’s work. Mr ,Alsop reported upon matters connected with the side-school, and other minor matters were dealt with.
