MANAWATU-OROUA RIVER BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Ma-uawatu-Oroua River Board was held in Palmerston North on Thursday, presided over by Mr. H. Akers, i Also present were Messrs A. Seifert, B. G. Gower, A. Buchanan,* J. Richardson, H. Barber, and J. E. C. Harrison. An apology for absence was received from the chairman, ' Mr. W. Carter. The engineer, Mr. F. C. Ha}', wrote advising that three replies had been received to the Board’s call for tenders for the erection-of an electric flood level indicator at the Fitzherbert. bridge. The engineer advised that the tender of a Wellington firm for the sum of £337 10s should be accepted. For this the firm in question was prepared to erect an electric recorder in the A'. Manawatu River at the Fitzherbert / bridge, and another in the Oroua river at Feilding. The recorders, according to specifications, are fo be of the most up-to-date pattern and are designed to automatically register flood levels in the Post Offices at Palmerston North and Feilding. A total height of 22 feet can lie registered and by an electric control a dial in the Post Offijee will show the rise of the waters. The Board discussed the various types of indicators, at some length, members expressing the- opinion that the work was one of urgency and as they were desirous of having the indicators set up qt the beginning of next year, it was necessary that the order should be plated immediately as the apparatus would have to be shipped from England. The secretary was accordingly instructed to advise the engineer) Mr. F. C. Hay, to place an order for the apparatus with'the firm he had Recommended. The engineer and Mr. A. Seifert were appointed a subcommittee to confer with the contractors in connection with the installation of the recorders. The matter of the transference cH: the Foxton office of the Board to x i Palmerston North, was left in the hands of the chairman, Mr. W. Carter, to discuss with the engineer. It was decided that no meeting; of the Board should, be held hi January unless'the chairman should deem it advisable to call the mem- ~y hers together. -r xfecounts totalling £146 were passed for payment.
