BOWLING.

TRIANGULAR SHIELD CONTEST The first round of the Triangular Shield contest was held at Levill yesterday afternoon, under ideal weather conditions. The green was in excellent playing order, and the afternoon’s play was most enjoyable. Levin Club, with four rinks in the field, secured a good lead over the aggregates of Foxton and Shannon, which makes the handicap somewhat severe at the outv set of the contest. Levin’s aggregate for the day was 102 points, which constitutes a record in the .history of the Triangular contest for one day’s play. The Shannon Club’s aggregate (two rinks) was 29 points, and Foxton (two rinks) 27 points. The averages, therefore are as follows: Levin 25J, Shannon 14£, Foxton 13£. The details are as follows: Levin: Cameron, Challies, Durham, Bull(s) 24 v. Shannon: Butt, Watterston, Clayton, Knowles (s) 21. Levin: Pink, Van Hartzscli, Percy, Suhan (s) 30, v. Shannon: Wilkinson, Lee, Mason, Roach (s) 8. Levin: Pink, Van Hartizsch, Holdaway (s) 25 v. Foxton: Huntley, Newth, Woods, Nye (s) 12. Levin: Chrisp, Edwards, Brown, Clements (s) 23 v. Foxton: Mattar, Barr, Heyes, Thomson (s) 15. Foxton rinks, although the scores indicate inferior play, were actually playing good bowls. Nye, and Woods as third, played a good fighting game against Holdaway’s four, the Foxton skip playing brilliant shots almost throughout, but an element of luck went in favour 'of Levin—although they, too, were playing well —which resulted in the Visitors not being able to keep the pace. Half way through the game scores were even—9 all —but following resumption at the afternoon tea adjournment Levin piled on the score. • / In Thomson’s game, Levin scored for the first five heads, making their score 10—0 before the visitors got . the .feel of the fast green. Then Foxton reduced the margin to 18 — 15 by the twentieth head, leaving them three points to get on the last end to tie, but in an endeavour to “smack up” the head, Thomson was , unfortunate in finishing five down making the score 23—15. The ladies dispensed a liberal afternoon tea, which was much appreciated. The second round of the contest will be played at Foxton on Wednesday next, whem the local club will put four rinks in the field against two from Levin and two from Shannon. The following will be the Foxton rinks:— Whibley, Walker, Barr, Nye (s). Pearson, Easton, McColl, Thomson (s). Mattar, Walton, Heyes, Woods (s). Parkin, Newth, Huntley, Bryant (s).
