THE SHANNON BRIDGE.
APPORTIONMENT OF COST. The cost of constructing- the new bridge over the Manawatu River on the Foxton-Shannon, main highway to replace that destroyed by Hood is apportioned by a clause introduced into the House of Representatives on Thursday night for insertion in the Local Legislation Act. The Main Highways Board is to bear one half of the cost up to £IO,OOO, three-fifths of any balanre between that sum and £20,000, and two-thirds of any balance in excess of £20,000. The remainder of the cost is to be borne by the Foxton Borough Council, the Shannon Borough iCouneil, the Manawatu County Council, and the Horowhenua County Council in the proportions of one-twelfth each for the two boroughs and live-twelfths each for the two counties. If the local authorities’ proportions of the cost of the bridge should exceed £10,200, the excess is to be borne equally by the county councils. Each county council is to share with the Main Highways Board in equal proportions the cost of the new approach roads in their respective areas. The cost of the new approach road in the [Shannon Borough is to be met by the ShannonBorough Council to the extent of £SOO and the Horowhenua County Council to the extent of £724, the Main Highways' Board to bear any cost in excess of the sum of these two amounts.
