Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1927. THE BEACH ROAD.

BEACH residents have a genuine cause of complaint in regard to the present unsatisfactory and dangerous access to the seaside. At present the road is blocked with sand drift and the detour is just as bad. Besides the obstacles mentioned at full tide cars have to travel through the tidal water. The only solution to safe and permanent access is by completing the road which leads through what is known as the sanatorium. The track is there, but formation and metalling is required. Agitation for the completion of this road about a quarter of a mile in extent, has been going on for years and until it is completed the present unsatisfactory state of affairs will continue. Ihe seaside settlement is a Harbour Board endowment and the Harbour Board is therefore, the controlling authority, but; the area is:within the Manawatu County "and this body levies rates upon the tenants of the Harbour Board. SjQ it will be seen that there is dual control, and both governing bodies here must share their responsibilities. The tenants of the Board pay an annual charge on a loan raised some years ago for the construction of the main road from the borough boundary to the seaside, the maintenance of which is the care of the County. The solving of the whole trouble is the construction of the sanatorium road. We believe the County will take over the road and provide for its maintenance provided the beach area raises a loan for the purpose 'out the tenants claim that they are

already loaded for roading. We would ‘suggest that representatives of the Beach Improvement Committee, Harbour Board, and County Council confer and endeavour ,fo come-do some finality in the matter. s .
