CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the local Chamber of Commerce was held in Ross’s Rooms on Thursday evening, presided over by the president (Mr. J. K. Hornblow). Also present: Messrs Alsop, Barron, G. F. Smith, D. Christie, 11. Hornblow, M* E. Perreau, F. G .Yco. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Corn, Scott, and the secretary. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: — From T. K. Sidey Esq., M.P., thanking the Chamber for congratulations on the passing of the Summer Time Act. The writer concluded: “It is the support of organisations such as yours that will go ia long way to assist in securing permaney for the measure.” —Received. From the Palmerston North Chamber receipt of the local Chamber’s letter re light line to the Beach, stating that the matter would be discussed at that body’s next meeting. The chairman stated that a press report credited the Palmerston president with the statement that a light line would not pay for axle grease. A member: The Palmerston president is noted for making extraordinary comments! —Letter received. From Mr. J. Linldater, M.P., re same, stating that he would have pleasure in co-operating with the Foxton Chamber in endeavouring to obtain a light line to the beach, and stating that he would also make strong recommendation in the dir- • ection of having the road from Foxton to the Beach declared a secondary highway in order that residents of Foxton and district might derive the benefit that is due to them from the petrol tax. Mr. Linklater added that - the request was a reasonable one and he felt sure the Chamber would realise the benefit that would follow the construction of a first-class road to the seaside. Mr. Linklater to be thanked for the interest he is taking in 'the matter. From Hon. W. Nosworthy, Post- * master General, in reply to Mr. Linklater’s request for an up-to-date directory for the Foxton Post Office, stating that the Department would not be justified in going to the expense of supplying offices of the size of Foxton with up-to-date copies of directories. —'Received. From the Associated Chambers of Commerce, enclosing a report of the Select Committee in connection with the Arbitration Court, adopted at the annual conference. —Received. ? From the Eketahuna Chamber of- t Commerce, asking for co-operation in bringing pressure to bear on the Minister of Public Works to havo the basis of allocation of the petrol tax altered from population tortile mileage basis as affecting bor-T oughs with a population of less than 6000. The president said boroughs through which the main highways traversed should receive the same consideration as counties. Mi'. Perreau endorsed the remarks of the president and it was decided to endorse the Eketahuna Chamber’s recommendations. FINANCE. Accounts were passed for payment and the secretary was instructed to circularise members re unpaid subscriptions. RURAL DELIVERY AND TELEPHONES. ' Reference was made to the rural delivery and telephone service and Messrs Christie, Perreau and Raikes were appointed to wait on the local postmaster and discuss the matter with him.
