UNUSUAL ACCIDENT.

PH J E STEM THROUGH GULLET. (Whangarei, November 21st. An, accident occui'red at Portland on Thursday evening when Nonnan Lightband, aged 50 years, of Grove Street, Edendale, Auckland, fell down a bank while smoking' a pipe. The force of the fall drove the stem of his pipe thx*ough his gullet to its fxxll extent, a distance of 21 inches, and then snapped off inflicting a dangerous wound. An operation was performed at the Whangarei Hospital on Friday and the stem removed.

The patient at present is making progress.
