Glancing through the file of the Manawatu Herald of November 16th, 1880, we glean the following items: — Thomas Lind notified that he had started in business as a shoeing and general smith, opposite Whyte’s Hotel. A meeting of persons interested in the Foxton regatta is advertised to be hell in Whyie’s Hotel. W. H. Shore was the hon. secretary. Mr. Tau Mata advertises that’ his chestnut mare went from Mr. Cox’s house. The horse has been found but not the saddle and “15/is offered to any one who will bring it back to me at Howe’s Hotel.” The Primitive Methodist Church advertise a service of song entitled “Elijah.” The proceeds devoted to the Trust Fund. “Mi 1 J. Russell will preside at the organ, and the Rev. J. Luke will read the Scripture quotations. The Town Board were considering the appointment of a ranger “to deal with the wandering cattle nuisance.” The schooner Martha Reia (Bro- • phy), arrived in ballast from Wanganui, and the ketch Emerald (Moore), 40 tons, sailed for Lyttelton and the ‘Aspasia’ schooner, 45 tons (Moore), sailed for Tiinaru. The expected arrivals were the schooners, Owake and Herald and the steamers Jane Douglas and Tui. It is announced that a new paper is to be started in Palmerston and is to be called the “Manawatu Standard” and is to be a bi-week-ly. [The “Standard” is now one of the Dominion’s foremost provincial journals.] The manager of the “Ready Money Store” [the late E. Osborne], advertises “substantial concessions” in drapery and clothing. ‘‘Special lines in Ladies’ underclothing:— Women’s trimmed chemises, 2/3, 2/9 and 3/9. Women’s trimmed nights, 3/9 and 4/6. Women’s trimmed draws, 2/3.” [The trade to-day referk to these articles as “lingerie. Anyhow, in the old days a spade was called a spade]. “Venn’s steam woodware factories” offered to furnish a fourrooined cottage from £8 10/-. The formation of the Sandon road was in progress and it was reported that “portions of the line will be rather bad in wet weather, owing to the soft material.”
