OBITUARY.
MR. J. W. POYNTON, S.M. Auckland, November 13. The -death occurred suddenly at 0.15 to-night at his residence in Epsom Avenue of Mr. Joseph William Poynton, Stipendiary Magistrate of the city since 1918. The late Mr. Poynton, was born in Kyneton, Victoria, Australia, in 1861, and was brought to New Zealand by his father, the late Mr. Joseph Poynton, in 1863. He was educated privately and started out in life as a gold miner at Maoriß Creek on the West Coast. He followed the occupation )of a gold miner for ten years, when he met Sir Robert Stout, who advised him to study law. [With that concentration and indomitable energy that were always characteristic of him, the late Mr Poynton set himself to the task of qualifying for the law, and in 1891 he was admitted as a barrister and solicitor. He practised in Wellington until 1895, when he was appointed Magistrate at Invercargill. In 1900 he was appointed Public Trustee, and in 1910 Secretary to the Treasury and Superintendent of Advances to Settlers. He was appointed a Stipendiary Magistrate of Auckland in 1918. A few weeks prior to his death lie was granted six months’ leave of absence. He leaves «t widow and one son. Prior to bis transfer to ;ljflekland, the late Mr. Poynton was S.M. in this district, where he was well known. On several occasions he delivered interesting and instructive addresses to the pupils of the local public school.
