HEMP MARKET.

OCTOBER GRADING RETURNS. The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper tow, and stripper slips for the month of October have been issued by the Department of

Forty-one bales at Picton were graded fine. .Thirty-one bales at Auckland, 69 at Wellington, and 110 at Foxton were rejected. The number of bales in each grade were as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Fine 41 (0)', good fair 218 (755), high fair 184 G (2619), low fair 4385 (2285), common 972 (451), rejected 210 (100), a total of 7672 bales as against 6217 graded the same period last year, an increase of 1455 bales. The. number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 1997, Wellington 1863, Foxton 2016, Wairoa 404, Picton 61, Blenheim 70, Pt. Chalmers 121, Bluff 1099, Lyttelton 41.

Nineteen bales at Auckland, 8 at Wellington, 20 at Foxton, and 37 at Bluff were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in : Ist grade 199 (14 : 5), 2nd grade 1497 (1356), 3rd grade 802 (252), condemned 84 (55), a. total of 2582 bales as against 1808 graded the same period last year, an increase of 774 bales.

The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 721, Wellington 431, Foxton 622, Wairoa 240, Picton 24, Blenheim 32, Pt. Chalmers 20, Bluff 387, Lyttelton 9, Waikuku 96.

'Stripper tow: —Twenty bales at Foxton were graded Ist grade, one

hundred and twenty-five bales at Wellington and' 44 at Foxton were graded 2nd grade. One hundred and thirty bales at Wairoa were graded 3rd grade. One bale at Wellington was condemned. A total number of 320 bales as against 150 bales graded the,same
