MISHAP TO s.s. KENNEDY
A mishap occurred to the s.s. Kennedy at the local port on Saturday evening which delayed her departure until the following morning.
During the afternoon bullocks were loaded for Lyttelton and one particularly wild beast caused a good deal of delay and eventually had to be left behind. When the steamer cast off from the wharf, the river, which was in flood carried the Kennedy downstream, broadside on and one of the big mooring ropes became entangled around a propeller. With only one engine functioning the vessel was swept downstream for about a quarter of a mile and looked a.s though it would carry away Fraser’s bbatshed. By expert judgment and careful manoeuvring, however, Captain Stewart was able' to turn the boat at the critical moment and bring it back to the wharf with only one engine. After working all night it was not until the following morning that the rope was eventually cleared from the propeller and the boat sailed at 0 a.m.
