RATING ON UNIMPROVED VALUE.
A poll was taken in Papatoetoe Town District, Auckland, on Tuesday last, 25th inst., when the ratepayers decided in favour of the change to rating on unimproved value. The polling was: —For rating on unimproved value, 325; against, 274; majority, 50. A poll was taken in Cobden Town District, Westland, on Wednesday, 26th inst., when the result was: — For rating on unimproved value, 83; against, 34; majority, 49. So far rating on the unimproved value has now been adopted in 78 boroughs, 55 counties, and not less than 40 road and town districts. There have been fourteen polls to rescind the system, of which only five were successful, and of those all but one have re-adopted the exemption of improvements from taxation.
