SERIOUS OFFENCES.
♦ EX-SCOUTMASTER FOUND GUILTY. Auckland, October 25. Thomas John Davies, aged 59, tried in the Supreme Court to-day .on five charges of indecent assault on five boys whose ages ranged from 14 to 17, was found guilty with recommendations to mercy on account of his age. Accused was scoutmaster at Tauranga, and it was alleged that most of the offences had occurred on trips occasioned by his business as an insurance agent, when he had taken some of the boys with him. Accused denied the charges, and contended that certain of the boys were actuated by ill-will against him. Mr. Justice Reed said he would consider the recommendation to mercy. He always did, but it must not be forgotten that prisoner was in the position of leader of Boy Scouts, and was expected to teach them right morals and conduct. One so placed and guilty of the charges made was deserving of substantial, punishment. H(is |Honor remanded prisoner until next Monday for sentence, directing that in the meantime he should be physically examined to ascertain whether the condition conducting to his .offences was not curable.
