' The sight of a fail' maid fashionably dressed sailing along at the wheel of a palatial motor car is a common ope in Hawke’s Bay nowa days, when women drivers quite equal in numbers the men, No comment, is raised by a oar with a lady in charge but this was not so in Napier, on Friday, when a fashionably dressed woman, complete even to the fur coat, proceeded down one of Napier’s main thoroughfares at the wheel of a four-ton lorry. With easy confidence and obvious skill she handled the rather ungainly vehicle, backing it into a landing stage with speedy despatch, while a small coterie of mere ibales stood round in wondering admiration. As a chap grows older many things that formerly gave him pleasure lose their appeal. But there’s one thing'he rarely tires of—his pipe. In fact the older a man grows (lie more necessary his pipe seems to become to him. Of course the enemies of the weed will laugh. Blit what does the man who does not (or cannot) smoke know of the joys of smoking? Tobacco is often roundly abused. Yet it’s harmless enough so long as it’s not heavily charged with nicotine as most of the imported brands are. Is there any really pure tobacco on the market? Yes; our own Now Zealand tobaccos are remarkable for their purity. And they may be smoked freely without fear of consequences. Another strong point in their favour is that the leaf is toasted. Hence their fascinating flavour and delightful bouquet. Where arc they to be had? Why, at any tobacconists. Ask for “River bead Gold,” mild; “Navy Cut,” (Bulldog) medium; or “Cut Plug No. 10” (Bullshead) full strength-!

The New Zealand Dairy Produce Board at its meeting at Wellington yesterday, decided to make arrangements for butter and cheese to be promptly shipped up to the end of 'January,in view of the general position of the British market with Argentine and Australian supplies short.

Accommodation locally for weekend visitors is taxed to the utmost. All hotel accommodation was booked up some weeks ago, and a number of applicants have been disappointed. The same demand for seaside accommodation also applies. An accommodation house at the seaside is urgently needed to meet the requirements of casual visitors.

A Palliatua resident is at work on a:i invention designed to allow an aeroplane to fly at a low rate of speed close to the ground with perfect safety, or to attain high speed at any height. He has visions of an air machine that from the speed point of view will be somewhat akin to the ordinary motor car. Pie states that the principle is an old one, but it has been overlooked in developmental work. The Bachelors Ball, held in the Moutoa Hall last night, attracted visitors from all parts of the district and was most successful both from a social and financial point of view. The interior of the hall was tastefully decorated and the catering and music were first-class. Mr. M. E. Perreau officiated as M.C., and extras were played by Messrs Newton and Graham.

Whitebait are running freely in the lower reaches of the Waikato Rver and the two canning factories on the river are handling fairly large supplies daily. In addition, a ( ertnin amount is being railed away for sale fresh, but the quantity is not. nearly so great as at the beginning of the season when cooler weather favoured a widespread distribution.

Motorists through the Manawatu Gorge are attracted by an object that resembles a tombstone, and many are tempted to pull up to make closer investigation in ease it might indicate that there was danJ ger ahead, and that the stone was erected to the memory of some other reckless motorist (says an exchange). The lettering on the stone explains that it is intended to hand down to posterity the names of those who were responsible for having the road widened to meet the fra the.

Among other things, the King Country is noted for the stamina of its footballers. In!the match Law OffiSoes and Banks v. the Stock Finns, at Te Kuiti last Saturday, a young player named Gilbert, on the latter side, fell on a piece of tin just as he had scored a try early in the game, and inflicted a severe cut in his leg (states the “New Zealand Herald”). Temporary measures were applied, and Gilbert continued playing until the end of the match, when a doctor decided that it was necessary to put five stitches in the wound.

Regarding the valuation of flax for rating purposes, Mr. C. E. Macmillan, M.P., has forwarded to the Tauranga County Council ihe following communication received by him from Hon. 0. J. Hawken, Minister in charge of Valuation Department: —“In the course of an interview on October G you asked for a railing in regard to the valuation of flax for rating purposes. Flax which has been planted is assessable as improvements and the value of flax which has come up as the result of drainage operations is included in the unimproved value.’' A warning to householders in respect to the use of certain makes of matches now being distributed in New Zealand, mostly for advertising purposes, is issued by the Inspector of Fire Brigades (Mr. T. T. Hugo) in his annual report. The matches in question are of the “strike on the box only” type, put up in cardboard cartons generally containing about twenty matches. A part of the stem of the match is made of some fibrous material which, depending upon how long the match is alight, smoulders or glows from fifteen seconds to a minute and more after the match is blown out, whether the head is on or off. It is pointed out that in the smouldering of these match stems lies the very possible danger of causing an outbreak of fire.
