Mr. W. D. Bauckham has sold his well-known grocery business to Mr. 11. Garbett, of Wellington. Elsewhere in this issue Mr. Bauckham thanks the public for their support and solicits a continuance of same for his successor,

An occurrence which is bound to lead to a good deal of discussion among anglers on account of the conjectures it raises is reported by Mr J. S. Tripe, who states that he landed three good-sized trout from the Makakaki river. One of these fish was full of whitebait, and another had a smaller quantity, while the third had no trace of any. The .point raised is whether the whitebait have come forty or fifty miles up the river from the sea or whether the trout have run a similar distance. The freshness of the small fish appears to be against the latter theory.

Thirteen years ago on Sunday last the Main Body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force departed from New Zealand. Two troopships —the Waimana and Star of India — which, carried the Auckland contingent, left Auckland on the morning of September 24,1914, but under in.stvuetions from the Imperial authorities were recalled from sea by wireless message and returned to port the next morning. They left age.in on the afternoon of October 11, proceeding to Wellington, where they joined the vessels containing the southern drafts. From Wellington at fi o’clock on the morning of October 10, the Whole force sailed for Egypt, in 10 troopships, escorted by four warships. : Good tools for all gardening purposes are advertised by the Colosseum Cash Stores.

A somewhat unusual incident took place in Ilawera on a recent evening, when a Chinese laundryman, standing in his doorway, caught the strains of his own country music proceeding from a radio loud speaker across the street (states the Ilawera Star). He excitedly rushed over to listen to the unexpected boon at (dose quarters, and obviously dreamed of his homeland. With the unravelling of the Oriental melodies he endeavoured to explain the Chinese musical story to various bystanders.

Lieutenant Frewen, the Queensland airman, was refused the permission of the Commonwealth Government to make a flight from Australia to New Zealand, and it is possible that the New Zealand Government will also refuse permission if (lie airman attempts the flight from this side (says a Wellington correspondent). Permission was refused in Australia because the machine Lieut. Frewen intended to use was a land machine, and so unsuitable for the purposp of a long flight over sea. It is expected that when the aeroplane arrives in New Zealand it will he inspected by the New Zealand Air Force experts, and that on their report the Government will decide whether or not Lieut. Frewen shall he allowed to make the flight.
