MOUTOA SCHOOL,

At last night’s meeting of the Wanganui Education Boayd a letter was received from the Moutoa School Committee stating that in response to the Board’s request a meeting of householders had been held to lake the feeling of parents as to whether the school should be closed and the children conveyed to jibe Eoxton District High School. The letter stated that the meeting by a large majority opposed the closing of the school. In reply to the chairman, Mr. Horn-blow stated that he had not received any complaints or requests from parents or committee. The reports before the Board were to the effect that the attendance of pupils had fallen off, and six or eight chil- . dren were attending schools in Eoxton.

The secretary stated that the attendances for the past three quarters averaged about 20 pupils.

The Chairman stated that the Board could not compel parents to send their children to Eoxton. Mr Hornblow said he did not attend the meeting as he was not notified to do so. He believed, however, that there was a feeling that the school was not central, being situated at the southern end. The Board was aware that there had been an agitation some years ago to remove the school to Marotiri. At the suggestion of the senior-inspector, it was ascertained that the children could be conveyed to and from Moutoa to Eoxton per char-a-banc at the Department’s rate of allowance. In reply to a further question, Mr Hornblow stated that the Shannon school was about four miles distant from the Moutoa school (in the Wellington Board’s district) and al)out eight .miles from the Eoxton school. The Board decided to take no further action and on the recommendation of the architect, it was decided to spend £SO on improvements to the teacher’s residence. CARNARVON SCHOOL.

The Board discussed the request to remove the Carnarvon school from its present .site to Makowhai, about two miles towards Sanson. Objection to the removal had been made and in order to finalise the matter Mr Hornblow moved that a plebiscite of the parents be taken, which, was agreed to. DAYLIGHT SAVING. Several committees in the Manawatu area wrote objecting to the summer-time hours being applied to the schools in their areas as it would impose hardships on the children. One chairman stated that- he “did not care a damn” what action the Board took, but that his children would not attend at an earlier hour than at present. The Board unanimously agreed that the committees concerned be, given discretionary power in the matter. SANSON TEACHER’S RESI--1 DENCE. Application was made to the Department for a grant to provide a teacher’s residence at Sandon. EOXTON D.H.S.

The action of closing the primary department of the Foxton D.H. School for a few days owing to a mild, outbreak of influenza, was endorsed.
