“WHISPERING WIRES.”
The big feature at the Town Hall to-night “Whispering Wires,” boasts an all-star cast headed by Anita Stewart, as the heroine, Doris Stockbridge. Two comedy detectives, played by Arthur Housman, and Mack Swain, supply some of the best humour this reviewer has seen in a long time. The “bulls in - question are so laden with ammum- \ tion, etc., that they resemble portable arsenals. McCarthy, played by Housman, is more busily engaged in paying attention to the pretty maid (Cecille Evans) than in sol-, ving crime and the scenes wherein the° dumb detective tries o make a hit with her are hilarious in the extreme. Science gives an unusual twist to this powerful story. The murderer places a gun in a telephone receiver. The weapon is discharged when the person on the other end of the wire merely rubs the receiver over the transmitter. After her father is slain by the weird device, Doris is spotted for death by two assassins. She goes sc far as to innocently pick up the death receiver. How can she possibly escape? Events from this moment move with intense rapidity until a most satisfactory and thrillincr climax is evolved, With “Humdinger” (comedy), N.Z. Scenic, Cartoon and News at nsual prices. Fred Thomson and his horse Silver King will supply Monday’s entertainment with their latest hit “The Wild Bulls Lair,” which with supports will also be screened at usual prices.
