From the Moutoa Drainage Board in reply to the Chamber’s letter re banking on the Manawatu River, stating that some three years ago the Board was prepared to take control and improve the stop banks between the Shannon and Whirokino Bridges, but the main interested owner most strenuously objected to the work being done. The present position is that all new work is under the control of the Manawatu-Oroua River Board. — Received. . From the Minister of Justice stating that he would endeavour to visit Foxton at the close of the session to inspect the courthouse. The President stated that the Minister of Public Works had recently inspected the building, the state of which, he said, he would mention to the Minister of Justice.

From the Manawatu County Council stating that the Chamber’s letter complaining of the bad state of the Foxon-Palmerston North road, was received at a meeting of that body. Members discussed the County roads and the action of the Council in receiving the letter at some length, and it was finally decided to write to the Main High-, ways Board pointing out that the Chamber’s request for'better roads had merely been received by the Manawatu County Council, and asking that the Board take some action to better the County roads. From the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce asking the Chamber to support a resolution viewing with grave concern and disapproval the recent increase in income tax and suggesting that if additional revenue is required it should be accomplished by economies rather than by additional taxation; also opposing the increase in the salary of’ Members’ of Parliament. —Endorsed. Mr. Smith again brought up the question, of obtaining an all night telephone service for Foxton and he was deputed to obtain certain information in regard to the matter, and to report to the next meeting. LIGHT ON TOWER, Mr. H. Osborne referred to the fact that the fishermen who were recently adrift m a disabled launch off the coast were able to guide their boat into the Manawatu River by locating the water tower. He considered a light should be placed on the tower so that it would be a beakon at night also. J. Ross, speaking from seafaring experience, said that the Marine Department would not allow a light to show out to sea from the tower. Air. Osborne considered that even if the light showed out on the land side, it would be a good advertisement for Foxton. The matter was l§ft in the hands of Air. Ross to bring before the Borough Council.
