RUGBY FOOTBALL.
ALL BLACK TRIAL MATCH. That New Zealand has still plenty of first-class Rugby material was proved at Palmerston North on Tuesday afternoon, when the third of the All Black trial games to assist in finding the (New Zealand team for the South African tour next year was played. The game was between North Island Possibles and Probables, the former representing the southern portion of the island and the latter, the northern end. The sides were very evenly matched, and a strenuous tussle, in which some great forwards were seen in typical New Zealand action, ended in a narrow, victory for the Possibles by 19 points to 18. * NORTH ISLAND FIFTEEN. After seeing the fifteens in action, the North Island selectors (Messrs E. McKenzie, N. McKenzie, and W. A. Guy) selected .the following team to represent the North Island, in the annual match against the South Island, to be played at Wellington on Saturday next: — Full-back: M. Nicholls (Wellington); three-quarters: Hook (Auckland), Sheen (Auckland), ,Grenside (Hawke’s, Bay); five-eights: Berridge (Auckland), L. Johnson (Wellington);, half-back: Kilby (Wellington); forwards: wing: Keene. (Auckland); hookers: Hadley (Auckland), Swain (Hawke’s Bay) ; lock: Harvey (Wairarapa); supports: M. Brownlie (Hawke’s Bay), Finlayson (North Auckland); back row: McWilliams (Auckland), C. Brownlie (Hawke’s Bay). Emergencies: McManus (Auckland), Brown (Taranaki), Rushbrook (Wellington), ' Coulston (Wanganui), Ward (Taranaki). In the South Island All-Black trial game, at Christchurch yesterday, Possibles defeated by 31 points to 15. , ' The following have been selected to represent the South Island against the North Island on Saturday, at Wellington:— Full-back: Lilburne. Three-quarters: Robilliard, Lindsay and Steel. Five-eighths: McGregor and Strang. Half-back: Dailey. Wing-forward: Scrimshaw. Forwards: Burrows, Hare, Stewart, Alley, Hazlett, Marslin, Snow, i, Reserves: Backs, Holden, Snodgrass and Carieton; forwards, Godfrey and Yoiing. ~ Cundy, the Wairarapa footballer, has scored 147 points in representative game \his season. Yet he is neither a Possible nor a Probable for South Africa. BENEFIT MATCH. FOR HARRY JACOB. The Manawatu and Horowhenua Rugby Councils have arranged a benefit football match for H. Jacob, between teams representing Manawatu and Horowhenua, to be played at Levin on Saturday. As previously reported, the stalwart skipper of -the Manawhenua reps is seriously ill in the Palmerston Hospital as the result of an accident during a match played last Saturday. The accident will put an end to Jacob’s splendid football record, and will incapacitate him from work !for I some considerable time. The action of the combined Councils will meet with the approval and generous response of the public throughout the district and- as a result a substantial sum should be raised to 'defray his medical expenses. Tickets will be oh sale throughout the ' district, and it behoves all who have the spirit of the game at heart and a sporting regard for the stalwart Manawhenua captain who is now % laid on a sick-bed to rally to the cause that will see him over his present triubles. For the All Blacks’ tour of South Africa next year the dates for leaving New Zealand, arriving in South Africa and leaving from there have now been finalised. Leaving Auckland bv the Aorangi on April 17th, and leaving Sydney by the Euripides on April 21st, the team will arrive at Durban on May 21st, and arrive at Cape Town on May 26th. They will leave South Africa by the s.s. Ceramic on September 4th. A cable received to-day from the South African Union states that an extra match is being arranged, making 22 matches and a trip also to be made to Victoria Falls. The question of the extra match will be discussed by the Union when the cable is confirmed.
