BOROUGH COUNCIL.

SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening to decide what steps the Council would take to fill the resignation of the loca| gas manager (Mr J. H. Downes), who has accepted the position of gas manager at the Nelson gasworks. There were present His Worship the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau), and Crs. Ross, Thoinpsoh, Lucinsk3 r , C. Rand, Rangiheuea, and E. Parkin. The Mayor, in outlining the object of the meeting, said that he very much regretted Mr. Downes’ departure. He had served the Council faithfully since 1922, and was a capable and conscientious manager. Cr. Thompson endorsed the Mayor’s remarks. Mr. Downes, he said, had filled a difficult position very successfully. It was decided to accept Mr. Downes resignation with regret and to place on record the excellent manner in which he had served the Council. It was decided to invite applications to fill the vacancy.
