RIVER EROSION AT MOUTOA.
STOP-BANK AND ROAD THREATENED.
“The Manawatu River near the old .Shannon Bridge is causing very serious trouble at this 'point, and unless the erosion is checked immediately the stop bank will be washed into the river, and also the main highway leading to the Shannon punt,” stated the County Engineer (Mr G. Hickford) in his report to the Manawatu County Council at its meeting yesterday. “On September 7th an inspection of Tippler’s pointy was made by the Hon. K. S. Williams, Minister of Public Works, the County Chairman, and members of tlie River Board, with the view to cutting a channel through' Tippler’s Point ou the left bank to relieve the pressure and prevent the erosion on the sight bank, but no decision has been arrived at. On Tuesday last a further inspection was made by three engineers from the Public \\ orks Department, the County chairman, and officials of the County, and nothing has yet been decided upon.” 111 the opinion of the Council the work was a matter for the Public Works Department, but it was decided to authorise the chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber) to expend, if necessary, up to £IOO on any work in connection with the cutting of the channel. ..
