“ON A STRING.”

GIRL AWARDED DAMAGES

The jury in tile action heard before Mr. Justice James in No. 3 Court, Sydney, in which Vera Colroavy, book-keeper, residing at Burwood, sued Lawrence William Arding Thomas, awarded damages to the amount of £1097. The claim was for £2OOO compensation for breach of promise of marriage, plaintiff alleging that defendant, who had been associated with picture theatres for some years, had given her an engagement ring in May, 1921; that on several occasions when the time for the wedding drew near something arose to delay it; and that he had eventually failed to fulfil his promise. In the course of his summing up His Honour remarked that there was no doubt the defendant had had the plaintiff “on a string,” for six vyears. It was admitted that a woman was not so attractive after 30 as she was between 25 and 30, and there was no doubt that the plaintiff had given to the defendant Ihe Test six years of her life in waiting for him to marry her.

“In this age,” continued His Honour, “it is of course difficult to discriminate between the young and the old, because of the mode of dress of our women. It is hard to find any old ladies at all now.”
