LADY TEACHERS AND BOND

NOT; FREED BY MARRIAGE.

Wellington, Yesterday. Girls who elect to become training college students should make up their minds to serve three years as teachers, as demanded by the bond they enter into.

A young woman in Wellington considered she had done with teaching for ever when she got married recently, but she subsequently received a rude shock when she was informed that she must complete her three years of teaching, in terms of the bond she had entered into. Very reluctantly she had to get someone else to look after her baby, and go back to the classroom.

Of these facts being referred to the Wellington Education Board, it was learned that the Board had not acted in the case mentioned. While it was true that training college students w r ere expected to fulfil their bond to teach for three years, it had not been the Board’s custom to take any action vdien women teachers married.

The Education Department made the following statement "“Women training college students are under bond to serve as teachers for 3 years after completion of their training college course or to refund the amount paid by the Department to them in allowance and fees. Marriage does not free these teachers from their responsibilities under the bond.”
