PERSONAL.

Miss E. Owen, of the Wellington Hospital nursing staff, is at present on sick leave in Foxton.

According to a statement made by Mr. Hall Skelton, of Auckland, arrangements are being made for Sir Joseph Ward to take over the leadership of the Liberal Party. In recognition of his plucky action in saving a man from drowning in Wellington harbour about three years ago, Mr. J. D. Lundy, chief officer of the s.s. Waipahi, was yesterday presented with a certificate by the Royal Humane Society.

What is regarded as an unique distinction because of their New Zealand birth was the celebration at Masterton on Sunday of the golden anniversary of the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. G. Smith. The parties are New Zealand born, their native town being Wellington, and were married in Masterton at St. Matthew’s Church in' 1877, by the Rev. J. F. Teakle. Mrs. Smith is a daughter of the late Mr. John Catt, of Upper Plain, Masterton. A pleasant social function took place at All Saints’ Church at the conclusion of the morning service on Sunday, when Miss. Williams, on behalf of the choir, presented Miss Ritchie with a Bible, prior to her leaving for England, as a token of the esteem in which she was held by her fellow choir members. The Vicar (Rev. W. H. Walton), suitably replied. A letter of appreciation of her services was also forwarded Miss Ritchie, who sails from Wellington on Thursday.

The death occurred at her residence Kimbolton Road, Feilding, yesterday, of another early settler of Feilding in the person of Mrs. Ann Beck, relict of the late William Beck. The deceased, who was 80 years of age, migrated from England with her husband and came onAo Feilding when the settlement was in its infancy. Her husband predeceased her some years ago. She is survived by a daughter and three/sons, James, John and William. One son, George, lost his life in the Great War.
