CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor)

Sir, —1 have read a good deal about the bad state of the roads in this county. I suppose I am like a lot of other county ratepayers, I get my rate notice and growl about the rates I have to pay and keep the county waiting as long as possible before I pay up. I didn’t trouble much about the roads when I used horses and gig. We could always dodge the ruts. Then the cars came on the market and like some of my neighbouring cookies, I speculated in a “Liz.” Didn’t like to be out of the fashion at the stock sales. Anyhow, the auctioneers seemed to be a bit more liberal with the blo'ke who sported a car. But I found out that the roads didn’t trouble me much until I started driving, a car. It was then I began to sit up and take notice and ask questions about my rates. Well, sir, in my opinion I don’t think the County Councillors know very much about roads —they ieave that to the clerk and engineer. They are more concerned with the price of butter fat,, wool, or the price of stock, so why waste their time at County Council meetings? Now that the Highways Board has come into existence why not let them attend to the roads and employ gangs of men to carry on the work in a proper way? If we wait for our cocky Councillors [to kIo anything then there will be darn little done to improve the roads. They would be better employed in helping Coates to produce more for the country. Every man to his job, but let experts look after the roads. I am etc., COW COCKIE.
